AUGUST 2009 A Seminole County detention trainee accused of killing his girlfriend is in critical condition Monday at an Orlando hospital after being shot by deputies. Jeff Thomas, 45, is accused of shooting and killing Melanie Lee on the side of State Road 46 in Geneva. Lee, 37, worked for the state prison system in Orange County at the Central Florida Reception Center near Orlando. Thomas was a prison guard, too, but he had been hired recently on as a Seminole jail trainee.
